Main Purpose of the Role

The role is primarily to manage and support our databases and to liaise with the development and systems teams to prevent production outages and improve stability and performance.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the highest possible server uptime as required in a 24/7 international business
  • Liaising with the development to design new and improve existing aspects of the DB schema
  • Writing, testing and executing maintenance on the DB schemas
  • Support for the applications and development teams during deployments
  • Liaising with the Infrastructure Team to discuss new hardware requirements where needed as well as specific changes required to new systems when they are deployed to make them suitable DB servers
  • Developing and documenting best practices for server development, access and security
  • Providing support in the event of DB outages
  • Implementing and running load testing scripts and procedures
  • Monitoring server load and liaising with the systems team to plan for upgrades in a timely fashion
  • Ensuring integrity of data and backups
  • Liaising with the Business Intelligence team, keeping them aware of schema and data changes
  • Documenting standard operating procedures for regular DB maintenance and changes and liaising without Operations team to handover the responsibility for running them where appropriate, or to rewrite them into a format that they can utilise safely

Experience

  • A strong base in one of the Truphone supported DB systems and a good working knowledge of at least one other. Currently supported systems are: MySQL; MSSQL; Oracle; MongoDB
  • A minimum of 3-5 years working in an Internet facing environment
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language
  • Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of database design, tuning, security, backup, archiving and recovery techniques
  • Hands on experience of the setup and use of DB monitoring and analysis software
  • Knowledge of PCI security and compliance
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks from multiple workflows in a high-pressure environment
  • Self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail
